HOW TO MEASURE THE SIZE OF A WOMEN'S RINGS?

01 Jan 2023 0 Comments

Why is ring size important?

The answer is very simple.

The outside of a ring will determine the style and design of the ring, i.e. the shape and look, engravings or pattern it will have on the outside. The most visual and aesthetic part, probably the reason why you have chosen to buy it =)

On the other hand, the inside of the ring will have a direct impact on comfort for everyday wear, so it is important to get the right size mainly so that you can wear it, to avoid unnecessary returns or perhaps to avoid the ring being a little loose or a little tight and resorting to wearing it on another finger that is not the one you originally wanted.

How to measure the size of a ring

One of the easiest ways to know exactly the right ring size is to measure the inside circumference or the circumference of the finger where you are going to wear the ring. But how do you do it correctly? We'll tell you below 😉

1 . SEWING TAPE FOR MEASURING THE FINGER

In the case of measuring the finger, we can use a tape measure, one of those that are used for sewing, to calculate the circumference of your finger and in this way we will know the length in cm of the contour of the finger (its perimeter). If we measure it this way, we recommend you not to adjust the tape measure too much, and not to leave it too loose so that the ring does not dance 😆.

If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can cut out a strip of paper about two centimeters wide and wrap it around your finger. Make a mark with a pen or pencil where the paper meets. Then spread the strip of paper on a ruler and you will know the value of the measurement.

We could also replicate it with a thin rope or a thicker piece of thread or whatever you can find.

Once we have the size of our finger in cm, we can use a ring size chart that we have designed and you can download it by clicking on the image.

2. MEASURE ANOTHER RING AND CALCULATE THE DIAMETER.

To get this measurement we can no longer do it with a finger, we must have a ring that fits us. It is a very reliable way to know the exact size of the ring. How can you do it? It is very simple and we will tell you step by step.

The first step is to place the ring you want on a ruler or tape measure and measure the inside diameter in millimetres, NOT centimetres.

The second step is to use a table of values to compare the results of the measurement with the corresponding size.

We have designed a template with the size of the rings so that you can download it and check your exact size.

  • Print the table on an A4 sheet
  • Choose any ring that you use and fits you well
  • Place your ring on the reference circles.

If the inside of the chosen ring matches any of the measurements in the table, this will be the appropriate size.

Check that the printed sheet has come out correctly (to scale) before testing your measurement. To do this, measure with a ruler the measurement 21 (inner circumference) and it should measure exactly 20mm.

3. COMMON RING SIZING CHARTS FOR WOMEN'S RINGS

Using standardised measurements to find your ring size is never a great idea, but if you have to give a ring as a gift and you have no way of getting your finger measured or another reference ring, you can use the following table of standard ring sizes by finger type.

Most common ring sizes by finger type

SIZE 10

Very thin fingers or little fingers

Inner diameter 15,9 mm

SIZE 12
Thin fingers or ring fingers

Inner diameter 16,6 mm

SIZE 14
Medium fingers. Ideal for the index finger

Inner diameter 17,2 mm

SIZE 16
Thick fingers or thumb

Inner diameter 17,8 mm

What do you need to know before you find your ring size?

The ring sizes will vary depending on differentfactors: weather, humidity, temperature, etc. . This is why finding out small details will be useful to avoid inconveniences when choosing the size of your rings.

The ring should fit you just right, not too tight, not too loose. Comfortable enough that you hardly feel it and it becomes part of you.

If we don't choose the right size for our ring, we will feel uncomfortable when we wear it, it may fall off and get lost, or it may be so tight that we choose not to wear it again.

Jewellery workshops can recondition almost all gold rings by downsizing if necessary, but ring enlargements can be quite difficult or often not feasible to make perfect.

Depending on the country where you buy the ring, the size will not be the same. There is a table of equivalences for this that you should know if this is the case. We will show you some references by country.
